With the election of Gibran Rakabuming Raka as Vice-President, President Jokowi appears to have cemented his legacy, and in the process, planting the roots of his political dynasty. But at the same time, the old guard remains influential. Former President, Megawati Sukarnoputri’s PDI-P party retains the largest number of seats in Parliament. Will this set up a clash between new and old political clans? More than 25 years after Reformasi, why does dynastic politics remain popular in Indonesia? Are democratic reforms over? Or are there pros to keeping it in the family?
In this documentary, IFAR Atma Jaya’s Research Scholar, Dr. Yoes Kenawas discussed why so many of Indonesia’s political parties run by families.
